WALKING THE WALK AS SHAMAN
“To be healthy, happy and whole you have to be who you are.” Janet StraightArrow Be The Medicine, Live the Power of You!
Over the years I have had well meaning people tell me that I could not be a Shaman for many reasons that had to do with their beliefs, image or marketing strategies. That was like someone telling me I could not be human or a woman. To be a Soul lineage Shaman is not common. It is a spiritual calling that comes from deep inside who you are, like the air you breathe. When I discovered this calling I did not believe it, or want it to be true, as it did not fit the image of who I thought I was. I have been surprised all along as I lived this life and continue to be amazed as I walk my walk. It has not been an easy journey, it is one of service to people and the divine. A traditional life is not possible, and I have accepted this, and my soul purpose to bring out the work of Be The Medicine for the remainder of my life.
WHAT IS A SHAMAN?
For many hundreds of years Shamans have been known to be wholistic healers, spiritual guides, and sometimes leaders in a culture or tribe. Shamans have been called by many different names in all traditions around the world from the beginning of time. Shamans were feared because they knew what was really going on when leaders were trying to control the people. For this reason, many generations of Shamans hid and did most of their work behind the scenes.
The original Shamans lived with the people in community and also were known to look out for them as a spiritual guide and protector. Each Shaman has their own gifts and purpose to live and share. They are of service to the greater good.
Shamans are known to heal themselves. They also see and perceive on all levels – physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and soul. They have also been know to know and explore a persons entire life to find healing and life solutions. I found this to be the way I see and experience my role as healer. It is natural for me to see on many dimensions and levels of being in everyday life, and working with clients and students. This is how my Medical Intuitive work evolved.
After twenty-three years of walking the walk, to be a Shaman today is to embody this organically. I work with everyday people, executives, professionals, medical doctors, holistic doctors and energy workers, massage therapists, spiritual seekers and holistic practitioners and teachers and all who are looking for a whole helpful viewpoint and tools for life and health today.
HOW I DISCOVERED MY LINEAGE AS SHAMAN
At the age of forty I was a top Realtor in NJ, working hard, raising two daughters as a single mom. After twenty five years of study, practice and research, I continued to study healing and spirituality, reading three books a week. I lived integrity and service and enjoyed helping people help themselves to make the best choices and guide them along the way.
My broker came in one morning and knowing of my study and interest, said he met a Shaman at breakfast who had just opened a shop in a local town. A Shaman in a diner…in New Jersey? My curiosity drove me to finish all I had to do for my clients, and then go to that shop. I was not totally familiar with all of the native items, but I loved the handcrafted jewelry.
My native heritage so far, had been to be told by my mother regularly as a child – that she was going to send me back to the Indians. She also told me to walk a mile in another’s moccasins to have compassion and understanding before judging them. In history we had studied about the Delaware and Lenape tribes locally, and other stories of Indians across the land. I did not really know what a Shaman was in the deepest sense.
So I went to the shop and waited until he was free to speak to me. He came over to me, and looked at me with his soft doe eyes. I relaxed and felt the deep love and honor he shared.
Eagle Bear was the one who told me that I was a Shaman, and mentored me as I traveled through spirit led explorations and discoveries for many years. I did not believe him. Instead I was awakened by inner and outer journeys. The puzzle pieces of who I am, began to come together as I had amazing direct experiences over and over again.
Guidance that I took for granted since a child, became something I paid attention to, and cherished. Eagle Bear taught me ceremonies, healing and spiritual, and timeless global perspectives, and so much more. When he died he passed on half of his lineage to me by direct transmission. I was in a deep spiritual space for months afterwards as I integrated all of the energy and transformation on many levels.
People ask me how I received my legal name, StraightArrow. Directly from Spirit I tell them. Thirteen years ago in a deep meditation I saw the letters spelled out, and a symbol appeared. I shivered from head to toe and cried gently. I realized that this name spoke of my soul purpose – to bring truth and healing directly, clearly and with joy.
It sounded native to me, and I asked a Shaman I was working with at the time if he was familiar with its origin. He answered me with a question – have you ever heard that name before? I realized I never had.
It’s your name, he said. I looked online and did not see anything to help me. I looked up straightarrow in the dictionary and it sounded like more of a conservative person, full of stiffness and rules. This is definitely not me. To be open to discover the truth and not limit it, is key for me.
SPIRITUALITY AND ENLIGHTENMENT
No matter how deep I go, or how much truth is revealed, there is always a giggle and deep love. I teach students that if you ever work with a spiritual teacher who is serious and full of themselves, and worst of all – say they are done with their personal healing work – run. We are all on this earth journey together, no matter our calling or role played, we have come here for spiritual evolution awaking our innate wisdom and gifts, while stumbling through challenges and illusions.
Spirituality is all about living pure love and the innocence of a child, with clear, direct perception, truth and experience. For me. life is a journey of healing and becoming more love, and more us, as a uniquely purposed person, and as a soul here on earth. My lineage as Shaman is a rainbow lineage inclusive of all. I found this path leads to enlightenment.
We are not here to leave the planet to be who we are, but to live here in our highest potential as spiritual beings as humans. This ongoing growth never ends – thank goodness or what would we do here? As a teacher, I am constantly a student learning each moment from each person and experience.
My medicine name is Heyoka Greywolf. This name and lineage was also given directly by spirit when I was first awakened as a Medicine Woman twenty-three years ago. I saw an Indian Chief in my solar plexus. As I asked who he was he stood next to me nearly seven feet tall and began to tell me more about who he and I were as one. This was my first experience of this kind and it was surprising in how clear it was.
I discovered that Heyoka is a powerful medicine of transformation. Heyoka is coyote medicine with adversity and joy, and learning from experience, you never know what to expect. I have since discovered that my mission as Heyoka, is one who helps people find illusion in self, and all of life, to live truth.
The second part of my name Greywolf, is teacher. Since I was a small child, as soon as I learned or discovered something, I thought of how to translate and teach it to others. To teach people how to Be The Medicine rather than try to do it for them, makes sense. Empowering people to live their own truth and live from their wisdom allows complete healing by living it. Putting all of the pieces together, I translate sacred wisdom into everyday logic and truth for people to receive and work with, in all aspects of their life today.
TRUSTING THE JOURNEY
I am grateful to have trusted my inner self and follow my heart and soul instead of listening to what was expected of me. My journey took me to explore and be initiated by spirit in many Spiritual and Shamanic lineages from around the world. I was guided to work with Masters in body and out. I began to teach and initiate people as if I had always done it. I also became aware of the profound healing that came through me.
As I studied many traditions, I questioned everything that created separation and filtered out man made fears, beliefs and illusions to discover the power of oneness and love in all. I walk the walk in a neutral loving path and teach others to do the same.
BE THE MEDICINE NOW
Ancient Wisdom in Modern Times. In these five decades I have witnessed and experienced the awakening and ascension of the people and the planet with awe and gratitude.
When I work with people, we sit together and move through whatever they need to learn and heal in ways that they can receive it. I am guided soul to soul. I have gathered thousands of powerful tools, and yet at this point it only takes direct connection, intention, grace and love to move people to heal, change and awaken their deepest truth, health and life.
Being the Medicine is about us living it each day. In business, healthcare, parenting, partnering, and all areas of life, people are finding their purpose and place in this world. It continues to be my joy and privilege to mentor advanced and new students, apprenticing them into themselves as leaders and teachers and healers and living their unique purpose. I work in concert with clients and students and any others needed, and as a guide to support your process, healing and goals.
Moving through many layers of realities and illusions is what everyone on the planet is going through. Being anchored in loving truth makes it easy when your entire life is transforming. Having lived a lifelong intense spiritual awakening and life, I know and understand the process, and support people in this without fear.
NOT EASY OR QUICK – AN ONGOING WALK
Going from a Mom and Realtor, to a Shaman and energy healer, guide and teacher was very traumatic for me, and my family especially. This was over twenty years ago when everyone said I needed to go to the southwest or some other place where I belonged. Reiki and energy healing was deemed weird and miracle healings were met with fear.
There were many challenges, and still it was easier to discover and live the truth of me, even when no one supported it but me and others who walked and worked with me. I could not and would stop or try to fit into what others expected, I had to follow the course as it opened before me.
DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL
The spiritual awakening journey for me was experienced as perilous as any Indiana Jones movie at times, quick wit and wisdom led the challenges of walking where there was no earth beneath my feet, and plenty of physical boundaries, and questioning emotional sanity. I found the inner strength, truth and treasure of me grow inside as my life as I knew it shattered into thousands of pieces over and over again.
I learned to call this process the Enlightenment of the Soul. From spiritual awakenings, and many levels of ego breaking, to losing my youngest daughter suddenly to death, my life as I knew it continued to change radically, until I found a new center of grounded peace, contentment and love. Losing Lisa was finding her, as our connection from her dimension to mine is direct, loving and purposeful as well.
This is not everyone’s journey, we all have a unique path to awaken and walk in our own life. Honoring each one of us for who we are and what we bring is important, as we all are one divine soul.
No longer weird or hard, this journey has brought me full circle into a grounded person who can live in many worlds in this world, and be comfortable and help many others do the same.
May You Always Walk your Walk in Love and Grace.

Here is an article I wrote in 2004 on this to discern the Shamanic calling and practice.
RENOWNED SHAMANS Jesus, Buddha, Dalai Lama. Gurus, Magicians, Healers and Spiritual Masters from many traditions carry the lineage of Shaman.
